Should We Seek Federal Funding? The Essentials of Federal Grants Administration

At first glance, finding and applying for federal funding can seem intimidating, not to mention managing compliance and reporting after an award is made. But it doesn’t have to feel this way! With an understanding of the fundamental codes surrounding federal grantmaking, you can set your organization up for success, ensuring that you are a good fit for federal funding in general and specific identified opportunities.
In this course, you will learn the ins and outs of federal award compliance from an experienced administrator. You will review what to look for in funding announcements and how to decide whether your organization has the administrative and programmatic capacity and alignment to be competitive applicants and competent stewards of federal funds.


  1. Review of Federal Grant Administration Resources including Federal Register, Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance; Code of Federal Regulations and OMB Compliance Supplement.

  4. Post Federal Award Requirements
  5. Cost Principles
  6. Audit Requirements


At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  1. Use federal grant resources to identify funding opportunities, and obtain necessary information to apply for and manage those grants.
  2. Identify the requirements and principles necessary to ensure grant compliance, and assess your ability and capacity to comply with these requirements.
  3. Begin preparations for audits and reviews.

Hugh Warren, Jr. is President of Hugh P. Warren, Jr., C.P.A., P.C., specializing in governmental finance and accounting. For 30 years, Hugh served in various capacities with the State of Georgia including Director of Finance for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and Deputy Director for Program Administration for the Georgia Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. In these and other positions, he was charged with grants administration and accounting for federal grants of more than $1 billion. Hugh is a subject-matter expert in federal-grant regulations and has worked collaboratively with local governments and nonprofits throughout Georgia to insure success in their federal grant compliance.
Hugh obtained his AA in General Studies from Middle Georgia College, BBA in Accounting from the University of Georgia, and MPA from Georgia State University.
