Charity Watchdogs, Financial Statements, and Charitable Contributions

Join us for a day-long session on compliance considerations for nonprofit organizations. With requirements that seem to constantly change and the emergence of “watchdogs” that have become sources of information for prospective donors, it is vital for your organization to stay in-the-know.

Presented by experts at Mauldin & Jenkins, an accounting firm that specializes in nonprofits, this session will help you achieve your financial goals – both securing funds and tracking them – through compliance, transparency, and reputability.


  • Special Event and Charitable Contributions: Fundraising is an integral part of many nonprofit organizations, and accounting for special fundraising events often proves challenging. This session is intended to address rules of accounting for special events and how it affects your donors.
  • Nonprofit Watchdogs: Nonprofit Watchdogs are a group of nonprofit organizations that provide information, reviews, and ratings for nonprofit organizations that can affect your ability to raise needed funds. Donors, including foundation and corporate staff, use these sites to review, monitor, and understand nonprofits as part of their funding process. Each site is somewhat different, using its own resources to track and evaluate nonprofits. You will learn about the online rating and review sites that have quickly become the new watchdogs for nonprofit organizations, paying attention to the metrics they use to evaluate nonprofits.
  • Nonprofit Financial Statement Overview: Nonprofit financial statements are the key way to understand the health and outlook of an organization. You will receive a technical foundation for the essential components of these statements. Topics will include cash vs. accrual, donor restrictions, capitalization and depreciation, functional expenses, and cost allocation.

  • Identify possible red flags related to your solicitations and special events.
  • Describe best practices in achieving good ratings from leading nonprofit watchdogs.
  • Assess an organization’s health by reviewing key nonprofit financial statements.

Jeff Fucito, CPA, is Mauldin & Jenkins’s Partner-in-Charge in Atlanta.

Jeff has specialized in audit and tax services for nonprofit organizations since joining Mauldin & Jenkins, and is currently responsible for the firm’s nonprofit practice. A frequent speaker at nonprofit events, Jeff’s experience also includes audit, reimbursement, and tax experience with long-term care facilities and other health care entities, manufacturing and distribution entity services, income tax planning, income tax preparation, and consultation for individuals and corporations.

Jeff also serves on the firm’s Executive Committee and Leadership Career and Development Committee, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Georgia Health Care Association, and GCN. He has served on the board for the Georgia Institute on Aging, and is past Committee Chair for the Georgia Society of CPA’s Not-For-Profit Training Task Force.

Aleisa K. Howell, CPA, CGFM, is a Mauldin & Jenkins Partner in Atlanta.

Prior to joining Mauldin & Jenkins, Aleisa specialized in the nonprofit and governmental practice for KPMG. Aleisa is a CPA and Certified Government Finance Manager, and serves on the Georgia Society of CPA’s Not-For-Profit Task Force. She also serves as a technical reviewer and committee member for the National Government Finance Officers Association’s certificate of excellence in financial reporting program, and is a member of the Association of Government Accountants, the National and Southern Associations of College and University Business Officers Associations, and GCN.
