Board development and engagement is key to nonprofit success. Successful board members contribute their time, talent, and treasure to the nonprofit. They also provide governance, set strategic direction, and ensure a financially strong and viable organization.
This session will focus on board development, board engagement, and getting your board to fundraise for your organization. Board roles and responsibilities will be covered, including the fundamentals – duty of care, duty of obedience, and duty of loyalty – as well as activities like recruiting and onboarding new members. You’ll learn the five tips to follow for a successful board, plus best practices for board size, composition, and committee work.
Engaging board members is often cited as one of the biggest challenges for a chair or CEO. Learn some tricks, with templates, for encouraging board engagement, setting the board agenda, and engaging in strategic conversations. Based on our work with more than 100 boards each year, GCN’s Nonprofit Consulting Group will showcase what works and what can work against you when it comes to engagement.
Fundraising is the second-most-mentioned trouble spot for staffing a board. We'll explain how board members can adopt one of three fundraising roles identified and developed by GCN, and teach you a role-play exercise for practicing “the ask,” that makes fundraising a task everyone on the board can handle.
Join us for a lively, practical, and fun training session in developing and engaging your board of directors.
