Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia's Public Service Program Helps Nonprofit Advertising Reach New HeightsTommy Pearce | September 2013
Learn how one GCN member provides larger-than-life advertising for nonprofits across the state at little to no cost.
Yes, it seems like there ought to be a giant, prominently-placed sign of some sort to let you know about it. Nevertheless, it’s true: free billboard space is now available to your nonprofit thanks to GCN member Outdoor Advertising Association of Georgia (OAAG). Through their Public Service Program, qualified organizations only pay production fees to share PSAs and other messaging on billboards throughout the state.
GCN utilized OAAG’s Public Service Program earlier this year for the annual Nonprofit Summit, allowing us to broaden the reach of the Nonprofit Summit and the GCN brand to a larger market who may never have known about us previously. With a handful of billboards positioned above Atlanta’s major arteries (I-85, GA-400, and I-75), the outdoor advertisements reached thousands of commuters every day, raising public awareness of the event and boosting engagement and attendance. The program has been a vital resource for Georgia Gives Day as well, helping the initiative raise nearly a million dollars for Georgia nonprofits in December 2012.
How does it work?
Nonprofits and government agencies can apply to the program anytime. When billboard spaces―digital or print―go unused, the space gets donated to the Public Service Program by OAAG’s members across the state, and made available to qualified applicants. Once accepted, an OAAG project manager will work with you to design and position your message for optimal exposure.
How does your organization qualify?
Just meet the following qualifications:
- You’re a nonprofit organization OR a charitable, civic or governmental entity.
- You do not have funds for full-priced advertising in any other media formats (TV, print publications, etc.).
- You provide service and/or outreach statewide.
Who has already taken part in the program?
Many GCN members have used the OAAG’s Public Service Program in the past: Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Quality Care for Children, Communities in Schools of Georgia, and Community Health Works. To see the program in action, you can view the program’s billboard gallery for examples of public service announcements from organizations around Georgia.
