A statement of solidarity against racism from GCN.
On behalf of the staff and board at the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, we want to make it plain and clear: We stand against racism.
The events of Charlottesville have been trying, and there will surely be more trying days to come as our nation attempts to heal and turns its attention to action. In observing American democracy, Alexis de Toqueville said: The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults. We believe that nonprofits are responsible for aiding in this repair and leading through example and influence.
Many of our nonprofit partners work directly in causes that are at the epicenter of the fight against racial injustice. We want you to know that we stand with you.
Many of our nonprofit partners work in missions that are peripheral to the direct work of establishing racial justice, but who can nonetheless stand up, speak out, and spotlight the cause. We encourage you to consider the ways your mission, your programs, your board, and your workplace can ensure that racism has no place in our sector, our institutions, or our communities.
The nonprofit sector is a force for good in American society. This diverse array of organizations – every size, shape, and cause area – is united in their common purpose, working in concert to improve all lives in all communities. Historically, nonprofits have always provided a voice for the voiceless, spoken truth to power, and organized for strength. We must stand together once again in order to send a forceful message: that our sector acts to correct the destructive impact of institutional and structural racism in our communities.
We want to encourage our nonprofit members to let your colleagues, donors, stakeholders, and the public know that our sector stands against racial injustice. You can start by placing the following icon on your email signature, the home page of your website, and your social media platforms, and by encouraging your stakeholders to do the same.
Beyond the logo, we encourage you to take steps to ensure that your workplace and your mission find a space to discuss and act against racial injustice in our communities.
