High Potential Diverse Leaders / Class of 2012

Presented by American Express and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, the High Potential Diverse Leaders Program is a leadership development program designed to provide the rising stars of nonprofit organizations with the skills needed to assume executive level responsibilities within the sector.

The program is designed to be an immersive and enriching experience of training, access, and interaction with nonprofit leaders and opportunities to develop their peer networks and support systems.  Special events, lectures, and scholarship opportunities are made available to participants throughout the year. Articles of interest are periodically provided, as well as networking/social events. The sessions are highly interactive and include case studies, discussions, small group work, and access to practical tools and knowledge designed to be immediately deployable in your organization.

Session 1:

Finding the Leader in You

Includes: a) Overview of the program, including expectations and requirements. b) Key challenges and happenings in the current nonprofit environment c) Introduction to fellow participants d) Overview of leadership and what it means to be a leader.

Session 2:

Mastering the Essentials of Nonprofit Financial Management

June, 2012

Every leader must master the language of accounting and finance, know what questions to ask, be able to evaluate the financial implications of their decisions and actions, and ensure that their organization maintains compliance. This session will present an overview of nonprofit accounting and finance from an entrepreneur's perspective, focusing on internal control policies and procedures and the special challenges found in nonprofit organizations.

Session 3:

Partnership Development to Maximize Your Organization's Impact

Today’s funders are looking for nonprofits to partner and collaborate to achieve maximum impact on the community and their missions. While in theory this sounds great, in reality it can be quite difficult to achieve. This session will take a look at how to build and sustain successful partnerships by focusing on building credibility and respect with diverse stakeholders; managing complex sets of partnerships and relationships effectively; knitting together diverse sets of interests; and dealing with multiple stakeholders.

Session 4:

Managing Others - Both Up and Down the Chain of Command

Successful managers and leaders create a positive, productive environment that motivates and brings out the best in people while maximizing the positive impact on their organizations. You must be able to get people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, personalities and skills to work together as a team to fulfill the organization's objectives. Ultimately, your success as a manager depends on your ability to manage those above and below you in the chain of command to success.

Session 5:

Maximizing Your Personal Value

You may excel at your job. You may excel at telling the story of your organization and its mission. But do you have the same passion in managing and maximizing your own personal value? Are you adept at marketing and promoting your own skills and talents, or do you typically put yourself last? Learn how to ensure your own personal impact by communicating your value at work amid increasing pressures to serve your organization and its mission.

Session 6:

Leadership as a Personal Journey

Leadership is not a destination, it is a journey, and it is not always an easy or popular one. There are times when you will be making tough ethical and moral decisions. You will have to be able to motivate a diverse workforce and champion your team of employees and volunteers. Most importantly, you will need to identify the kind of leader you want to be, and then lay a path to become just that.
