Organizational Assessment Program

A HEALTHCARE GEORGIA FOUNDATION AND GEORGIA CENTER FOR NONPROFITS PARTNERSHIP

AUGUST 2010 – MARCH 2012

In keeping with its dedication to supporting nonprofit healthcare organizations that serve Georgia's underserved individuals and communities, Healthcare Georgia Foundation is partnering with the Georgia Center for Nonprofits (the Center) in delivering a state-wide capacity-building program that provides an organizational assessment process.

The Program
An organizational assessment is an opportunity for your board and staff to:

  • Create a common picture of your organization’s strengths and challenges in key management, governance and operational areas;
  • Prioritize recommended actions to strengthen your organizational infrastructure;
  • Create an action plan to implement the necessary actions;
  • Address issues in your organization before they reach crisis level.

An organizational assessment is NOT a strategic plan. It allows you to focus on the infrastructure needed to build the capacity of the organization to meet its mission, not on the programs to do so.

The Organization’s Commitment
This is an opportunity to learn about your organization without using funds from your operational budget. This voluntary assessment program, a greater than $4,000 value, will be provided at no dollar cost to the nonprofit organizations selected to participate. To have a successful assessment experience your board and staff will need to be involved throughout the process. On average, an assessment can be completed within three months of the organization’s indication to participate with approximately four hours being needed from your board members during that time period.

The Assessment Process
After an introductory visit from a Center staff member/consultant, your organization will be matched with a Center-affiliated consultant to work with you on the assessment. The consultant will lead the organization through the phases of:

  • Information gathering from board, staff and documents
  • Data analysis and draft report reviewed
  • Consensus on the major strengths and challenges
  • Consensus on priorities and action steps
  • Report acceptance

Upon completing the organization assessment, the Center program manager will conduct an evaluation process, develop a one year plan to measure impacts of the work and conduct a review of accomplishments against that one year plan.

The Benefits Received by the Original Organizations
Below are some of the benefits from the assessment process identified by healthcare organizations that have previously participated in this program:

  • New members added to the governance board;
  • Board members understand what is expected of them and are more active in committees;
  • The board has become active in fundraising;
  • Board and staff became energized and participated actively in subsequent strategic plan creation;
  • A marketing plan has been developed;
  • Installed budgeting process and financial system.

The Application Process
Your organization is invited to apply for this organization assessment process if you are an organization whose primary mission is to provide healthcare services to Georgia’s underserved population. While your entire mission does not need to be healthcare, healthcare must be a primary service to your clients.

If you meet the above qualification, please complete the information sheet linked below and send it to Neil Sklarew at the Center (ns@gcn.org) by July 30, 2010.  If you have any questions regarding the program, your qualifications to participate, the application or the selection process, please contact Neil at 678-916-3011.

Once all applications are received, you will be informed in August 2010 whether you have been accepted, placed on a wait list, or denied. Healthcare Georgia Foundation encourages you to participate in this exciting program if you are interested in building your organizational capacity as a means to better fulfilling your health-related mission.
