Enthusiasm Waning for Major Charitable Governance Reforms, Ways and Means Aide Says

Support in Congress for enacting sweeping charity governance reform measures has diminished, a House Ways and Means Committee staff member said October 31.

At a program in Washington sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, John Buckley, minority chief tax counsel for Ways and Means, said support for governance reforms in the House has dropped "to the vanishing point," and there is even less support in the Senate.

He attributed the changed attitude to efforts by the nonprofit sector, especially Independent Sector, to acknowledge there have been abuses by charities, to show the abuses are not widespread, and to offer solutions. More >>
