SYMPOSIA
SESSION I. Pros and Cons of Profit-Making Enterprises for Nonprofits Date and Time: April 1, 2009, 9 a.m. to noon
The current drastic funding decline across corporate, government and foundation sources means it may be advisable for your organization to explore the shift to an earned income approach to meeting your mission. If your nonprofit already has earned income programs, you may need to re-examine them in light of the need to compensate for decreased philanthropic giving. In either case, a number of questions must be answered: - How prepared is your organization to endure the current changes in the market place? - Have you created or modified a plan to diversify your income streams? - Is your organization’s culture ready to embrace social enterprise/earned income? - Is your organization working strategically toward financial self-sustainability? - Finally, how can you ensure earned income programs do not dilute your mission? This symposium will examine the trend that is taking the nonprofit sector by storm, and explore the challenges and rewards of implementing or escalating an income-based approach to fundraising for your nonprofit. Presented by Cindy Kane, Senior Consultant, Social Ventures, LLC
SESSION II. How to Create Stronger Nonprofit Partnerships in Tough Times
Date and Time: May 4, 2009, 9 a.m. to noon
Collaboration among nonprofits has become more commonplace as nonprofits struggle to share shrinking financial resources, face the insistence of grant-amking foundations that they cooperate more effectively, and seek ways to have greater impact in their communities. While the wisdom of nonprofit collaboration has many clear and inarguable benenfits, it can be difficult to achieve. Consequently, most nonprofits settle for very limited collaborations. In the envinronment facing nonprofits today, however, true partnership may mean the difference between survival and closing the organization. This symposium will present and explore with you different types of collaboration, examples of successful collaborations, and how common barriers to collaboration can be addressed and overcome. Presnted by Eric Speakman, Speakman Management Consulting
SESSION III. Effective Branding - A Nonprofit Survival Strategy Date and Time: June 18, 2009, 9 a.m. to noon
Operating in an increasingly more competitive and turbulent environment, smart nonprofit organizations are using the power of marketing to achieve a competitive advantage and sustain their organizations. Resistance by nonprofits to thinking in marketing terms has decreased, as competition for nonprofit funding has increased. Powerful nonprofit brands will raise money, attract more volunteers, and help more people. We will explore the steps of building/enhancing and maintaining a powerful brand for your nonprofit, with case studies that demonstrate the impact of branding on nonprofit performance. Today, it's a serious edge your nonprofit may need to stay healthy. Presented by Nancy Longacre, Vice President of Marketing, Georgia Center for Nonprofits
