Coastal CEO Central

Coastal CEO Central

April 2008
First City Club
Savannah, GA

Launched in 2004, CEO Central is specifically designed to provide nonprofit CEOs with concepts and strategies to manage the everyday complexities of leadership. The invitation-only program for coastal nonprofits with budgets larger than $500,000 consists of a trio of symposia delivered by leading authorities on various aspects of nonprofit management and strategy. Program concepts are reinforced by peer exchange, enabling participants to share solutions, benchmark performance and build relationships.

Coastal CEO Central is for the leaders of Georgia’s larger coastal nonprofit organizations. The forum is by invitation.  Participants are encouraged to attend all symposia. Here is what previous CEO Central attendees have said about the program.

"I found these programs informative and valuable.  It was very useful to hear the challenges and solutions of other local nonprofit CEOs.  I'm glad this has come to coastal Georgia."
-Marna Lewin, CEO, Hospice Savannah, Savannah

"The opportunity to network and exchange ideas with my peers was very valuable, and I was impressed with the quality of the speakers at each symposium.  I would recommend this program to other nonprofit CEOs."
-Jamie Kendall, Executive Director, Southeast Georgia
American Red Cross, Brunswick

"I enjoyed meeting my counterparts in other organizations and was impressed with the consultants."
-Scott Smith, Executive Director,
Coastal Heritage Society

2008 COASTAL SYMPOSIA
Location: First City Club, Savannah

SESSION I.  Leading as Coach: Creating a Culture of Support
By Jerry Mabe, President and CEO, RightPath Resources
Date and Time: Apr. 23, 9 a.m. to noon

When asked to define their greatest asset, CEOs in nonprofits and for-profits alike cite their people - particularly the organization’s leadership ranks. What is your nonprofit doing to invest in and grow this asset? Forward-thinking CEOs see the urgency of growing leaders from within, anticipating the fast-approaching leadership skills gap caused by Baby Boomer retirements.  This symposium will discuss the knowledge, skills and strengths nonprofit CEOs need to develop multi-dimensional leadership; that is, success at getting results, building relationships and developing other leaders, now and for the future. Building a coaching culture in your nonprofit – based on results, relationship, EQ (emotional intelligence) and trust – is key to this success. We’ll explore what creates a coaching culture and steps you can put into place to get started.

SESSION II.  Leading Strategic Alignment
By Chris Volf and Floy Work, Partners, Work Volf Consultants
Date and Time: May 22, 9 a.m. to noon

How do you make your strategic plan real? How does one go about getting alignment between their everyday work plans and their strategic plan? Why is it that the majority of organizations are not able to execute on their strategic plan?  This session will address these questions by focusing on summarizing and communicating your strategic plan. To do this we will use a strategic framework, develop the alignment of people and processes to execute, and determine some key metrics that measure organizational success.

SESSION III.  Leading for Excellence: the Qualities of Great Organizations
By Karen Beavor, President and CEO, Georgia Center for Nonprofits
Date and Time: June 23, 9 a.m. to noon

Researcher Jim Collins’ best selling book, Good to Great, identified the common factors found in the most successful companies, and made recommendations for how organizations could adopt these qualities.  In Good to Great and the Social Sectors, Collins asserts that nonprofits must adopt similar qualities that transcend for-profit and nonprofit boundaries, focused on social sector realities. This session will discuss Good to Great’s powerful recommendations and explore their application to nonprofit organization.  You will leave with tools to ascertain what is needed to take your nonprofit from good to great.
