Quarterly Symposia:
Influencing And Managing The Critical Leadership Team - CEO, CDO & Board Chair
June 24, 2008 8:30 – 1:00

Who better understands the importance of cultivating relationships than the CDO! Aside from cultivating donor relationships, the CDO is challenged to build relationships with the CEO, the Board Chair, and other lay leaders. To accomplish this task requires the blending of both personality and professional role in developing a successful leadership style. This session will assist participants in identifying their leadership style and applying it within their organizational context to create a successful leadership team.

Objectives:

  • Identify personality style and address how it is applied in building leadership capacity;
  • Strengthen working partnerships with the CEO and Board Chair; and
  • Create a personal action plan to build leadership capacity.

Mindy Werthheimer, Ph.D., LCSW, director of field education at the School of Social Work, Georgia State University specializing in relationship building for human service professionals and students.  Dr Werthheimer is also a consultant and trainer for nonprofits and governmental entities specializing in board development, governance, leadership development, strategic planning and ethics.  Dr Werthheimer served as board chair of Jewish Family & Career Services in Atlanta.  She is author of the 2008 BoardSource publication The Board Chair Handbook.

Leading People – Managing Performance & Getting Results

Bosses give orders and manage tasks; leaders inspire, communicate and allow their people to manage themselves.  In turn, people who work for a boss tend to stay in the lines and deliver exactly what is asked of them.  People who work for leaders feel safe to go a step or two further than you asked in order to provide you and the organization with the best outcome they can.   This session will outline methods to manage the performance of your team through clear communication and through building a culture of high performance and results. 

Objectives:

  • Learn keys to setting the leadership tone for performance
  • Understand the concept of leader as servant
  • Gain techniques for building functional teams including roles, communication, trust-culture

Andrew Clegg, is the Atlanta based Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development at Points of Light & Hands On Network, a national nonprofit whose mission is to inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action that changes the world. Originally from England, Andrew has lived and worked for more than 15 years in the US, from 1987 to 2001 and returning most recently in 2006. His career in HR has included roles in the Corporate and nonprofit arenas, both in the UK and US. In 2007, he earned his Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification to go along with his UK Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) certification. His most recent experience involves working on the HR and management issues resulting from the Points of Light and Hands On Network merger.

Leadership Courage – The Art Of Negotiation

Effective influencers get valued resources, maintain and build relationships, and gain people's trust. This session will explore the major principles of influence that are universal across cultures; methods for establishing credibility through expertise and relationships; understanding practical tools that can help managers avoid the most common negotiation mistakes.

Objectives:

  • Develop a negotiation and conflict resolution style that builds healthy relationships and gains people’s trust
  • Identify the key obstacles to successful conflict resolution and difficult conversations
  • Develop a better understanding of key decision making styles
  • Design metrics for measuring progress in improving negotiation skills and mentoring others in the development of their influencing skills


Bill Johnson
Executive Vice President Partnership Group, Citi Cards Global Consumer Group with overall responsibility for the performance of this business unit. The Partnership Group comprises four primary components, Sears, Home Depot, Retail Sector (Canada, Macy’s, Shell, Goodyear, and others), and Commercial Payment Solutions (Citi Business & Diners). He also manages Business Development activities for the Citi Cards franchise. He is a member of Citigroup’s Management Committee. Bill joined Citi Cards in 1999 and held various management positions within the Partnership Group before being named Executive Vice President for the business. Prior to joining Citi Cards, Bill worked for 10 years for GE Capital, where he served in a variety of management roles with increasing responsibilities. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Georgia State University.

Strategy Execution – The Most Critical Leadership Competency

Translating a strategy into actionable activities is where the rubber meets the road and often where the source of mediocre results is located.   Year over year growth in revenue, endowments or capital resources doesn’t just happen, it requires a consistent practice – a discipline of execution.  This linking of the core processes, people, strategy and operations, is the centerpoint of building a culture of execution within the nonprofit, and it is a critical leadership competency. 

Objectives:

  • Learn the 7 keys to project management success 
  • Understand techniques for coordinating work streams/tollgates
  • Master defining metrics for success

Jeff Coble, Senior Managing Consultant – IBM Global Business Services is a 1991 BIE and 1992 MSIE graduate of Georgia Tech.  He has worked for Walt Disney World, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, KPMG, and IBM.  For the past twelve years, he has focused on supply chain consulting with particular emphasis on retail, CPG and consumer electronics clients.  His domain expertise is in distribution network design, and supply chain/operations strategy.  Jeff also runs a nonprofit stock theatre company for teenage children.
