Momentum

To support nonprofits addressing complex issues in communities around the state, the Georgia Center for Nonprofits developed Momentum. The first and largest project of its kind in Georgia, this innovative process, based on extensive research, focuses on transforming the way nonprofits manage and sustain higher performance levels over time, while catalyzing communities of peer leaders to cooperatively tackle large and complex problems in their community. More than 200 nonprofits and 13 national, regional, and local funding partners have participated in Momentum initiatives to date.

How the Momentum  process works

Momentum is a rigorous, team-based strategy and leadership development experience for executives, board, and senior staff. The multi-year process is designed to help participating nonprofits create actionable high-impact strategy, make dynamic data-driven decisions together with their board and management team, and implement enduring systems to manage and measure results. It includes an organizational assessment and customized organizational development plan, an intensive team-based performance management training program, and individualized coaching. Our learn/apply/implement/share model establishes applied skills and institutional knowledge that sustain performance improvement over time.

The process actively supports and measures growth at the individual, team, and organization-level around the following goals:

Enhancing Organizational Strategic Capacity Momentum will help participating teams build capacity to think and act more strategically, thus enabling them to increase their organization’s performance and impact.

Developing Effective LeadersMomentum will help leaders become more strategic, results-oriented, and focused on constant improvement because of their access to top ideas in the sector and our direct support and coaching in implementing those ideas.

Fostering CollaborationsMomentum will help nonprofits develop their ability to build productive partnerships.

Promoting SustainabilityMomentum will help build lasting capacity within these nonprofits through peer network creation, extending the reach of the program over time.

Building Momentum 
around the state

2016-17
Momentum: Atlanta

In partnership with the Zeist Foundation and the Kendeda Fund, this two-year capacity-building initiative is designed to increase the sustainability of a group of Atlanta-based nonprofits benefiting: veterans, children and the under-employed, Georgia's cultural landscape, and local geographies challenged with environmental issues.  

2015-16
Momentum for Early
Childhood Success

In partnership with The Peyton Anderson Foundation, this initiative engages 12 organizations and 4 agencies focusing on serving the needs of children from birth to five and their families in the Macon-Bibb County region.

Momentum: Westside

In partnership with The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, this three-year, capacity-building initiative is helping 45 nonprofits grow their respective community impacts to ensure that they play a primary role in revitalizing the historic Castleberry Hill, Vine City and English Avenue neighborhoods.

Momentum for the Arts 

A two-year initiative engaging four cohorts and 44 nonpofits in Augusta, Savannah, Macon and Albany cohorts, made possible by the statewide support from the Georgia Council for the Arts, regional support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area, alongside a group of local partners.

2011-13
Momentum: Coast

Our pilot project brought together 99 organizations – more than half of the nonprofits working in the lower coastal region – to participate for a three-year process, in partnership with the St. Marys United Methodist Church Foundation and with support from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
