November Topics for High Performance - Sustainability

As a sector, nonprofit organizations have the ability to increase economic opportunity, the quality of public spaces, and the investment and development activity in distressed places.   Even though nonprofits contribute to society through this kind of value creation, they continually have to find ways to maintain and improve service-delivery.   In a nutshell, nonprofits are constantly searching for a path toward sustainability.  For November’s Topic for High Performance, GCN is focusing on strategies that facilitate sustainability within your nonprofit and the sector.

There are a variety of different theories out there that may guide nonprofits in becoming sustainable; however, the core concepts are strikingly similar.  The capacities that are said to be the most critical to nonprofit sustainability are: decisive, strategic and accountable leadership; financial and programmatic adaptability; and the resources to deliver programming.  The sustainability of your organization is not based on writing a better grant, or finding that one product or service for which you can charge a fee, it's about your ability to continuously deliver programming that impacts and improves the community you serve.

Fundraising Spotlight - Organizational Sustainability Resources.  Organizational sustainability is often misunderstood to mean primarily financial sustainability.  That misconception occurs because, when an organization becomes unsustainable, the symptoms of that problem show up in the finances.  However, organizational sustainability -- or the surviving or even thriving of an organization -- depends on much more than effectively managing the organization's finances.  In any organization, there are some primary dimensions that, if they are managed well, will ensure the sustainability of the organization.
