January Topic for High Performance - Emerging Leaders

Proudly sponsored by: American Express

Whether it is delivering early childhood education, training the unemployed to get a job, or aiding disaster victims, nonprofits increasingly do the work required to fulfill our desire for a civil, compassionate, and well-functioning society.  Like most organizations, their ability to consistently deliver these results depends more on the quality of their people than on any other single variable.  Yet today nonprofit organizations struggle to attract and retain the talented senior executives they need to fulfill their missions.  The rapid growth of this trend is why the Georgia Center for Nonprofits is focusing on Emerging Leaders for the January Topic for High Performance.

According to Tom Tierney’s Nonprofit Sector's Leadership Deficit Report, during the next decade there will be a leadership deficit resulting from both constrained supply and increased demand which will continuously become more acute.  He reports that by 2016 nonprofits with revenues greater than $250,000 will need to attract and develop some 640,000 new senior managers - the equivalent of 2.4 times the number currently employed, and organizations will need almost 80,000 new senior managers per year.

Tierney’s report suggests nonprofits make it a priority to:
  Invest in leadership capacity;
  Refine management rewards to retain and attract top talent; and
  Expand recruiting horizons and foster individual career mobility.

Click here to see the updated addendum from Tierney’s research in partnership with American Express Philanthropy.

Join the Georgia Center for Nonprofits this month as we present information to our partners across the state to help address these leadership challenges now and prepare for the future.
