What he was getting at was that the fund raising processes of an organization must be well thought through and well planned. He advocated for a total development plan— and the grant seeking efforts of nonprofit organizations must be an integral part of the total development plan.

East Atlanta Kids

East Atlanta Kids

Jill Sieder is making a dramatic difference in the East Atlanta Community. And people are noticing. Jill, founder and executive director of the East Atlanta Kids Club, will be featured in Turner Network Television’s Dramatic Difference spots that will run nationwide on TNT during the month of August 2008. Watch out for the spots featuring Jill, Kevin Banks (EAKC program director), and the children of East Atlanta Kids Club.

Sieder founded the East Atlanta Kids Club in 1998 with other neighborhood volunteers after learning that many low-income youth in the intown Atlanta community needed more to do during their out of school time. Through a true grassroots effort, she recruited friends, neighbors and local leaders in East Atlanta to help develop the EAKC program. The Kids Club is now a thriving nonprofit organization that engages more than 100 youth between the ages of 7 and 16, and about 150 adult volunteers, on a year-round basis in a rich mix of recreational, cultural and educational activities. The youth of East Atlanta and surrounding neighborhoods receive tutoring with homework, computer instruction, job and life skills education, and are regularly engaged in art projects, sports and fitness activities, and field trips to recreational and cultural venues that their families could otherwise not afford. Best of all, the kids get the chance to spend quality time with caring adult mentors.

Sieder has been recognized by the Atlanta City Council, Mayor Shirley Franklin, and even the President of the United States. In 2002, Sieder met with President Bush in the shadow of Air Force One and discussed the importance of Americans dedicating time to provide service in their communities. Sieder says her efforts with the kids in her neighborhood make her feel a valuable part of her community, as she sees the impact of the extra attention and opportunities that the kids receive. For many of the kids, that has translated into better school performance, ambitious plans for the future, and a more positive self-outlook.
