Class Spotlight: Internal Controls and Best Practices- Essentials of Finance

Internal Controls & Best Practices is one in a series of six classes in the Essentials of Finance Certificate Program. This class will cover cash receipts, cash disbursements, safeguarding assets, financial reporting to the board, annual audit of financial statements, and conflict of interest policies and code of ethics.

Class Spotlight: Educating Volunteers- Essentials of Volunteer Management
Thursday, June 19th – Marty Atherton
Volunteers must be given the knowledge and skills to do their tasks. In Module 3, you will learn how to orient the volunteer to your organization, risk management strategies to protect the volunteer, your clientele, and your organization, as well as how to provide volunteers with the necessary resources and training.

Essentials of Volunteer Management Certificate Program
June 2008
GCN is pleased to announce another new Nonprofit University certificate series-the Essentials of Volunteer Management Certificate.
A five-module Nonprofit University certificate series that develops key volunteer management skills and provides the knowledge needed to recruit, retain and recognize volunteers. The five, three-hour sessions provide volunteer management essentials to organizations and individuals seeking the most current and effective approaches to assess and prepare volunteers for their significant role within the organization.

Essentials in Nonprofit Board Governance
Nonprofit University is pleased to announce a new 5-course certificate series: "Essentials in Nonprofit Board Governance." Tailored to the nonprofit sector, courses include: July 2–Establishing the Governance Structure; July 16–Good vs. Exceptional Boards; July 23–Effective Board Management: The Board Chair's Role; July 30–Board Recruitment, Orientation and Engagement and August 6-Evaluating and Refreshing the Board. Essentials of Nonprofit Management and Leadership Certificate Series

June Lunch & Learn
Join us on Friday, June 27th from 11:00 to 12:30 at the GCN Headquarters as the Georgia Center for Nonprofits host its 6th installment of the 2008 Lunch & Learn Series with a session on Understanding Nonprofit Risk Management & Insurance. This event is FREE of charge BUT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH. Risk management encompasses a wide range of activities related to anticipating, avoiding, controlling, and financing risk. Claims made against nonprofit organizations fall into three general categories:
  • Claims and lawsuits filed against the nonprofit and its staff,
  • Claims for injuries to staff, and
  • Claims for property a nonprofit owns or controls.
This workshop provides simple frameworks for organizing and implementing basic risk management practices in a nonprofit organization. C.W. Copeland serves as the Georgia Center for Nonprofits Insurance & Benefits Consultant. Mr. Copeland is a 12-year veteran of the insurance & financial services industry. Raising Change 2008
A Social Justice Fundraising Conference in San Francisco, hosted by the Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training and the Grassroots Fundraising Journal is taking place July 25-26. $500 stipends are available for interested groups. Contact Monica Simpson for more information.

Raising Expectations

The Atlanta Braves Foundation is the non-profit arm of the Atlanta Braves that actively supports community organizations and their programs within the metro Atlanta area. The Atlanta Braves Foundation is currently accepting 2008 grant applications. The Braves Foundation actively supports metro Atlanta community organizations and their programs that focus on youth in the areas of education, recreation, and health. The 2008 grant guidelines and application are available online here and must be postmarked on or before July 31, 2008.
