Ask the Expert 5/4/2008

Answer provided by Allen Nance, Mansell Group President and Summit Presenter.

Q: My organization has a really small marketing budget, but I’d like to do more online marketing. What are some inexpensive and easy ways I can use online marketing for my organization?

A: Online marketing is less expensive than you may think. There are many easy and cost-effective ways to increase your online marketing activities to reach your constituents more effectively.

Look for some online social networking opportunities that fit your organization’s mission and activities. You can create a Facebook or MySpace group to raise awareness for your organization and to keep your constituents informed. You can also use a site like YouTube to post relevant videos and allow members to post videos, which can increase interest and interaction among your constituents. It also provides the potential for your marketing endeavors to go viral, providing an even better bang for your buck.

Update your Web site to engage constituents and give them a reason to visit the site more often. Simple acts such as posting news releases, keeping an event calendar updated and adding new information will help create a relationship where members want to visit the site monthly, weekly or even daily.

Consider posting your annual report and other publications on your website. Not only will this save you some extra printing costs and help the environment, it’s often more convenient for your readers to view those documents online and print them at their discretion. By updating your Web site with these documents, you’ll keep visitors interested and coming back to see what’s new.

Use email notices to communicate. With email newsletters and notifications, you can reach your constituents quickly. Email notices are especially helpful for time sensitive information and help you stay in touch with members at a much lower cost.
