Statement on Hurricane Katrina

The Center Encourages Support for Nonprofits Offering Disaster Relief

Atlanta, GA - 9/01/2005 -

We at the Georgia Center for Nonprofits express our deepest concern and sympathy for the communities in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi affected by Hurricane Katrina. And we pledge to work through our nonprofit members and other partners around Georgia to support relief efforts across the region.

Hurricane Katrina has torn apart homes, lives, and entire communities, and has challenged all of us to work together, in an unprecedented, coordinated effort, to provide aid to our fellow citizens and rebuild devastated communities. Nonprofits across the nation, particularly in Georgia and other Southeastern states, are working hard to help: They are waging on-the-ground search-and-rescue missions, supplying food and medicine, transporting and sheltering refugees, coordinating volunteer efforts, and much more.

So much rests on the work of these organizations, and they cannot solve these mounting problems alone. The Georgia Center for Nonprofits calls on the business, government, faith, and philanthropic communities—as well as the general public—to work with the nonprofit network to address this crisis: Donate. Volunteer. Encourage others to do the same.

For more on how you can help, visit this page on the local American Red Cross’s Web site.
