Georgia Center for Nonprofits Acquires OpportunityKnocks.org

Center brings national jobs resource to Georgia nonprofits

Atlanta, GA - 5/26/2004 - The Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCN) announced today that it has acquired OpportunityKnocks.org, a Web site that lists nonprofit jobs across the United States.

The program is one of several key assets put up for sale in January by The Management Center (TMC), a San Francisco-based organization that is closing its doors this spring. TMC narrowed the field of bidders to eight organizations in December, and in February GCN won out.

Karen Beavor, executive director of GCN, says the acquisition will mean good things for nonprofit employers nationally and in Georgia: "OpportunityKnocks.org is perhaps the most sophisticated of the nonprofit jobs sites. By tapping its potential, we can give organizations across the country and here in our own state an easy, affordable way to reach and attract the qualified staff they need to be strong and effective."

In addition, the program will generate revenue for GCN, she says. "With the proceeds we can expand and improve our other important programs for Georgia nonprofits, as well as better sustain our own organization."

While OpportunityKnocks.org is a national program, Beavor says GCN's other programs will retain their Georgia focus. She says, however, that the organization will seek to recycle some of the revenue earned from nonprofits outside Georgia back into their communities.

"Figuring out how to do that," she says, "will require thoughtful, intentional work, and the input and partnership of lots of other people."

GCN had plans to develop an online jobs program long before OpportunityKnocks.org became available, according to Beavor. "Our customers, resoundingly, have asked that we move our jobs service online," she says. "By purchasing a well-branded, well-established site, we can meet their needs now, rather than later." GCN will discontinue its nonprofit jobs publication, Opportunity NOCs—which is available in print only—by July 2004.

Beavor says that, in time, OpportunityKnocks.org will become the nation's leading provider of information about nonprofit jobs.
